From Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet op. 13 to Leoš Janáček’s ‘Intimate Letters’, the young hopefuls of the Mona Quartet have some surprising encounters in store for us. Mendelssohn’s tormented work is in the classical style, but it is inspired by Beethoven’s last works just after the death of the great deaf man. Janáček’s Quartet No. 2 is written in a passionate style because the composer wrote about his love at first sight for the beautiful Kamila Stösslová. Written a few years earlier in a style reminiscent of Ravel, Germaine Tailleferre’s brief Quartet shows all the classical mastery and humorous imagination of the composer of the famous Groupe des Six.
